Western Zone Recap; Day 5 - Hasbrouck leads the way on the final day

The Alaska Swimming Zone Team finished the final day of the 2009 Western Zone Championship in strong fashion moving up from 8th to 7th, passing Wyoming in the final day.  The 7th place team finish ties the highest finish Alaska Swimming has ever had at the annual competition.

Leading the way was Tessa Hasbrouck (17-18 girls) who won the 200 IM and 100 Free, finishing 4th in the 100 Back.  Cori West (also 17-18 girls) won the 800 Free, finishing 2nd to Tessa in the 100 Free, thus wrapping up a meet in which she finaled in every freestyle event, winning three.

The 15-16 girls had three of the top 8 finishers in the 200 IM.  Janelle Stacy placed 2nd, Olivia Bowen 6th, and Jordyn Caldwell 7th.  Janelle also placed 2nd in her 100 Back.

Other individual top 8 finishers were: Ciera Kelly (3rd, 11-12 girls 50 Back), Even Marsh (6th, 11-12 boys 50 Back), Phillip Martinez (4th, 15-16 boys 200 IM), Emilee Johnson (5th, 15-16 girls 100 Free), Ryan O'Leary (3rd 15-16 boys 100 Free), Tyler Mickelson (5th, 15-16 boys 100 Free).

Again, the relays proved to be a strength.  The following relays each scored in the Top 8:

  • Sammy Burke, Emmie Jennings, Dakota Isaak, Ciera Kelly (5th, 11-12 girls 200 Free Rly)
  • Emilee Johnson, Olivia Bowen, Janelle Stacy, Jordyn Caldwell  (3rd, 15-16 girls 200 Free Rly)
  • Cori West, Kendra Standley, Meghan O'Leary, Tessa Hasbrouck (3rd, 18 & Under girls 200 Free Rly)
  • Ryan O'Leary, Tyler Mickelson, Phillip Martinez, Kenny Fox (4th, 18 & Under boys 200 Fr Rly)
